LED LIGHT THERAPY
What is LED?
LED stands for light emitting diode which is a semiconductor device that emits light when current flows through it. The color of the light is determined by the energy required for electrons to cross the band gap of the semiconductor. They are well established in clinical anti-aging and skin care therapy as well as in treatment of a wide variety of skin conditions!
What are the most common types we see in the skincare world and what are their benefits?
Red LED: stimulates collagen and elastin production, which can aid in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It can also help to improve skin texture, promote healing, and boost blood circulation
Near Infrared: stimulates circulation and further promotes wound healing and can be combined with other forms of LED for more specific needs (ie: a combination of red and infrared with blue, green, or yellow light can help with rosacea!
Blue LED: A personal favorite; this light destroys acne-causing bacteria, reduces inflammation, and prevents future breakouts. An extra bonus is that it can also calm irritated skin and reduce redness.
Other LED you might see but are less studied include, green which improves hyperpigmentation and evens out skin tone, and yellow which also helps to reduce inflammation.
One of our favorite ways we like to incorporate LED light into our regimens includes daily with the Omnilux face mask - targeting acne with their Clear mask, aging with the Contour, or spot treating areas like the eyes with Eye Brightener or the acne spot treatment Blemish Eraser - there’s an option just right for you. They also have options for the décolleté, hands, and a mask specifically for men. Additionally, LED is a great option when incorporated into a facial! Whether it be after extractions or while a jelly mask is setting, the benefits are long lasting.
